Vol. IV · Functory QuarterlyThe Ledger№ 001 · Edition 2026
IThe model
One license. Three shapes.
What you pay AWS, and what you pay Functory.
Functory is licensed software that runs in your own AWS account. AWS bills you directly for infrastructure — unmarked, no reseller in the middle — and you pay Functory a flat license fee for the runtime and, where applicable, the engineering support behind it. Tiers scope the support model and deployment control, not the feature set.
IIPlans
Three plans, one library.
Every plan ships the full primitive library. What changes between tiers is the support surface, the deployment model, and the operational commitments.

Can we run Functory air-gapped, in GovCloud or on-prem?
Yes, under the BYOC license. We ship the runtime binaries, the Functory CDK stacks, a bootstrapped customer CDK app, and a deployment runbook; we do not require outbound connections from your environment. We have delivered BYOC engagements on AWS GovCloud, Azure, and on-prem Kubernetes.
02
Do you take an equity or revenue cut?
No. Functory is licensed software, not a revenue-share arrangement. You pay a flat monthly or annual fee for the license and, where applicable, support. Your revenue, your data, and your customer relationships are not ours.
03
What happens if we exceed our plan?
Nothing, abruptly. The plans do not gate features or entity counts — they scope support commitments. If the shape of your workload changes materially, we schedule a conversation and adjust the contract at renewal. We do not meter usage or throttle at runtime.
04
Is there a free tier?
Not a hosted free tier. The runtime is licensed, not subscribed to. For early-stage teams we offer a reduced-fee Pro plan during the first twelve months of production use — bring an architecture conversation and we will quote accordingly.
05
How are AWS costs billed?
Directly by AWS, to your AWS account. Functory has no reseller arrangement with AWS and does not mark up infrastructure. If you'd like a ballpark for your specific workload — entities, traffic, retention, which overflow databases you need — we're happy to sit down and build an estimate with you.
06
Can we switch tiers mid-contract?
Upgrades take effect immediately and are pro-rated. Downgrades align to the renewal date. Moving to BYOC requires a new contract because the delivery model is different.
